What's in a Name?

We’re often asked, ‘where did the name Spinach come from?’ When we opened our doors in 1999, agencies used acronyms that made them sound like law firms (most still do). We wanted to create an agency with a single-minded focus to help our clients grow stronger. So we tried to think of a name that would communicate our raison d’être succinctly, elegantly.

In the end, Spinach was given to us on plate by a six-year-old girl. Seeing a mountain of violently scrunched paper on the dining room floor, the little girl walked towards her father and asked, ‘What are you doing Daddy?’

The father lifted the little girl to his lap and wondered how he was going to explain the complex problem he was struggling to solve. Eventually he said, ‘Darling, we’re trying to think of something that tells people we’ll help them grow big and strong.’ The child looked at the mountain of paper and said, ‘Oh Daddy that’s silly, everyone knows Spinach helps you grow big and strong’.
